The India Phillips Foundation supports children at the Cortez Family shelter downtown San Diego. One night a month we visit the Cortez homeless shelter and together we make a craft or color pictures, then we have birthday cupcakes and candles. We create individual gifts for the children that are having a birthday that month to make them feel special. Typically there are 6-15 birthday children each month. The foundation also donates items for holiday parties like Halloween which includes costumes for the children. Every September we have a back-to-school drive so that every child receives a backpack filled with school supplies to start the new school year.
The Cortez Hill Family Center is a 120-day program with 150 beds of transitional housing, case management, counseling, and employment assistance, for homeless families to overcome trauma and transition into independent living. The program focuses on stabilizing the family unit and developing individual plans to secure employment and permanent housing.

Cortez Hill family Center is one of the only homeless programs in San Diego County that houses families together. Family members are not separated by age or gender.
